Abstract

This is one of the most important laws in Egypt; it governs civil law matters including obligations and property. Unlike Western civil codes, the Egyptian civil code does not contain a section on personal status. Personal status laws are codified in a separate law.

Although the Egyptian civil code is secular in nature, Article 1 stipulates that Sharia law will be resorted to should legislation and custom be lacking, which rarely happens. Moreover, some Islamic principles, such as al-shuf’a, are codified in the area of ownership of immovable.
